Mouth cancer screening

With mouth cancer on the rise, screening during a check-up appointment is vital, so that signs can be detected and treated early. During the appointment your dentist will examine the soft tissues within the mouth, for example your tongue, lips, gums, tonsils, palate and floor of the mouth. During the early stages of mouth cancer, many signs and symptoms may not be noticed, which is why it is important to attend regular check-ups with your dentist. However some symptoms that do often appear include:

  • Ulcers that appear in the mouth and do not heal within 3 weeks

  • Lumps or swellings in the mouth

  • Red and white patches in the mouth
